Mindful Manhood Minute: Priority

Priority: a preferential rating, especiallyone that allocates rights to goods and services usually in limited supply that project has top priority, something given or meriting attention before competing alternatives.

Pick me, pick me!  Everything and everyone vies for our attention every day.  Work demands more of our time and talent. While your family wants more of your love and attention.  Which one wins your heart reveals our priority; actions do speak louder than words.

When did our work gain so much prominence that it competes with our family for first place?  Wasn’t our work supposed to provide the means for having a great life with our family?  And when did work begin to define our self-worth instead of our family?   When did work become our life instead of our kids, family, and our wife?

The priority battle is nothing new.  In Luke’s gospel, Jesus reminded the rich young ruler what proper priorities look like.

27 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this, and you will live.”  Luke 10: 27-28

Love God, love people.  Love work didn’t even make the top ten.

Be mindful that God will always provide the ability to accomplish anything he challenges or commands us to do.

So how do we change this?  Fortunately, the answer lies in the same passage:  27 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.”

We learn to love through the Father, who first loved us.  Abiding in him, we learn what it means to love, heart, soul, mind and strength truly.   His love transforms us, showing us how to love God and others, especially our family.   His love establishes, maintains and protects our priorities.

Since God is love, wouldn’t it be wise to learn from love’s Author and Creator?
