Last week I asked myself: “Are the spiritual and personal growth resources that I’m reading, listening to, or watching focused on heart change or habit change? What is the difference between them, and why does that matter?
Heart change, challenges, and changes what I believe to be true, healthy, and Holy. Remember, what we believe affects how we think, feel, and behave. Faith in our Father’s love for us forges heart change, transforming our capacity to love deeply, extend grace, give gratitude and freely forgive.
Lasting habit change results from heart change; although following the rules and applying new boundaries is beneficial but not transformational and often unsustainable without heart change.
Heart change happens when we realize that we can’t live a healthy, sinless lives on our own. We need God’s mercy and grace to transform our selfish, rebellious hearts into Spirit-filled surrendered hearts.
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.” Ezekiel 36:26-27 NIV
Take an inventory of your library, devotionals, books, podcasts, music, and magazines, then ask yourself this question; “Is this material cultivating heart change that reinforces habit change or just focused on habit change?” If it’s heart change, that’s great; if it’s just habit change you might want to find a better resource.
