I’ve been a big fan of “This Old House” for years. I love the way they demonstrate and explain in plain English home renovation. Recently I watched an old episode where Roger Cook, the landscape expert, installed a drip irrigation system.
For those of you who are not familiar with this system, drip irrigation is a method of crop irrigation that involves a controlled delivery of water to plants through pipes, tubing, and emitters. The water is delivered from a source directly to the root zone of individual plants. Water constantly drips onto plants to keep them well watered.
Listening to Roger describe how the system works, I reminded how our daily devotional or quiet time with God is very similar to drip irrigation.
God’s Word is the source of the Living Water that flows from his heart. Whether it’s one verse, one chapter, or one book, His Word contains all of his presence, power, provision, protection, and peace. Every time we read his Word, whether, in our bible or daily devotional, God’s Living Water flows into our heart, flows directly to the roots, much like drip irrigation.
Nothing is wasted, and it contains all the strength we need for this day. You will find this same principle in our “daily bread” referenced in the Lord’s prayer in Matthew and Luke, and “His grace is sufficient” referenced in 2 Corinthians 12:9.
Through his Word, God provides all the Living Water we need for today and every day. Therefore, our daily devotions or quiet time with God is vital to our spiritual growth. His Word daily delivers the exact amount of Living Water that our roots, heart, mind, and soul need 365 days of the year.
If we are to become more like Christ, diligently devote time with our Heavenly Father, every day, is vital to becoming the beloved son or daughter we were created to be. Today’s a good day to begin.
